  1. Hi James,
Thanks for sharing your information on diabetes. My cat loves to eat Friskies treasures can food that has 11% protein in the food; the carbs are not listed on the can. She gains weight in the winter and slims down in the summer due to more activity outdoors. She rarely eats her dry food that I keep in a bowl beside her water. Do you recommend a brand of cat food that is good for her?
    Thanks,
    Patty

    1. Hi Patty and thanks for those comments. Yes Oscar our cat seems to gain weight in Winter as well. Maybe the cold weather makes him want to eat more and he doesn’t like it when we try to limit the amount of food we give him due to him being 2 kilos overweight at the moment! We find that the Purina and Dine foods are good quality brands.

  2. Wow this really opens up my eyes about what I feed my cat! Thank you for this info. I’m going to take more precautions to ensure my cat lives a long healthy life

  3. Wow I had no idea diabetes was that common in cats! I have a male cat who looks a bit like Garfield…weight included. I’m wondering if I should get him checked out! He’s 14 years old and has always been a pretty lazy cat. I’m not sure if that’s just because he’s lazy or if he has diabetes now! Thanks for a great informative post!

  4. Hi, Jim

And thanks for sharing this post about cats and diabetic. I don’t have a cat but I would like to have one in the future. This information is valuable for me regarding food cats should not eat little or no carbohydrates. That’s good to know. The signs the cats with diabetics are showing are detailed and informative.

  5. Hi Jim,
Wow! What a great information. I do not have cats but i will tell my friends and family who have cats to visit your site. This will be really helpful for a lot of people.

    Thank you.

  6. I knew that cats have obesity problems. I read about cats having heart complications not long ago. And now diabetes? And for all I thought cats are active creatures. They should be getting enough exercise running and climbing around? No? I love cats but I didn’t have one. I knew the responsibility of raring a cat. Not to mention the heartache if your cats developed conditions like this.

    1. Thank you Kenny for your feedback. The problem for cats and their owners is the type of food we eat that can cause obesity. I remember once when taking a cat of ours to the vet for a checkup the vet, after weighing our pet, asked us what we fed him on. We felt very guilty when informed that the amount and type of dried food we were feeding him on was equivalent to him dining at McDonalds each day! Cats are carnivores so the best food to give them in a healthy diet is unprocessed meat with very small amounts of good quality dried food.

  7. I am grateful to have read this article because I have had 3 cats and 1 left that is a senior. He is a large Coon and has been in good health. This article has now made me aware of the dangers of dіаbеtеѕ and I thank you for the input. Over the years I have had vets that only cared about their bottom line and could care less about the proper treatment of animals. Luckily I have found the best vet in the world since and appreciate his candor. Thanks again for the heads up on cats and diabetes!

    1. Thank you for those comments Chris. Dogs do get diabetes but the incidence is low – certainly not as high as other diseases dogs get such as heart, kidney or liver disease.

  8. I have three cats and we try and feed them very high quality food, always. One of my good friends’ cats had diabetes and it was a real challenge for her to make sure he got his insulin as needed and you could definitely see the cat was suffering, so I am determined that won’t happen to any of my cats. Our last cat lived to 21 years old (!!) so I think I’m doing something right. My cats now are just 7, 3 and 3 so hopefully we’ll have many more healthy years with them. Thank you for this informative post.

  9. Thank you Hillary for those great comments. Wow you certainly took great care of your last cat for it to live to that ripe old age! Best of luck with your current cat family!

  10. Hi James,
Thanks so much for this very informative article. Although I have cats for about 30 years I actually have never thought about diabetes. The vets say that the problem of dry food is mainly because (the cheap stuff) can create kidney problems.
Now, looking back on one of my cats who became very fat after his neutering (he was already 8 or 9 years old, before he always had succeeded to escape). We called him as nickname “Fat-black”. Reading the description of the symptoms he might well have had diabetes. One afternoon 3 years ago, he passed by, smiling (seemed to me) and then we didn’t see him for a long time. 2 or 3 months later we found him in a far end of the celler, already quite decomposed…….

  11. Hi James,

This provides great information on diabetes in cats. This reminds me of my colleague’s pet, which seemed to have passed away because of diabetes. This article is going to provide a lot of help to those that need to treat their cats with diabetes.
